Whether you are new to scrapbooking or a veteran to the craft, it is always fun to imagine a scrapbooking layout idea, and watch it come together on your pages. If you are an avid scrapbook artist, then you have, no doubt, come up with ideas that have worked and some that haven’t. Trial and error are necessary processes, because there are many ways to display your photos or memorabilia.

Who Will View

When contemplating a scrapbooking layout idea, you should first determine how many pictures you have; how many will fit comfortably on a page or spread (two pages next to each other); how many pieces of memorabilia you want on the page; how busy the page will be; and who will be viewing the pages. A memory book created for a child’s grandmother in another city or state will have different things on her pages than the scrapbook you make for your home, since you have access to different bits and pieces of information that might only be of interest to the immediate family.

Map It Out

A successful scrapbooking layout idea is one that has been selected from among several others that you’ve considered. Start with a basic color that will draw out some of the subtler colors in your photos, and then choose a “frame” color to either set your pictures on—squarely in the middle or offset to one side. If there is not enough room for another picture on the page, is there room for a sticker, a text, dialog box, frame, or other detailing? If you have a large table (or floor) to set things out, do a few different selections at a time and really choose the scrapbooking layout idea that best fits the need and feel of those photos.

Pros and Cons of Consistency

A scrapbooking layout idea that showcases every page in the same way becomes boring to make, as well as boring to look though. After the first or second page, people will stop seeing the pictures and only see the identical layout on all pages. For example, they will hone in on the blue background with two pink boxes, and it won’t even matter what’s in the pictures, they probably won’t look at them. However, mixing up the scrapbooking layout idea with different photo arrangements, stickers, decorations, and memorabilia not only adds some excitement to the pages, it keeps the people looking and reading, as there is so much going on within the page.

You have the photos, you have the colorful background papers, and you have the creative vision, but somehow your pages don’t have that magazine page look that you’re trying to create. The key is in the layout – professional layout artists study the subject and work with experienced pros before putting those fabulous pages together. Here are some of the ways they accomplish it.

How the Pros Do It

Have you ever noticed that a well-designed page in a magazine or on a web site pulls your attention to the most important element on the page? That’s because the human eye automatically scans a new page in a particular way. The pros know that and place the important elements in one or more of the natural points of interest. It’s easy to use those points of interest in your scrapbooking layout, too.

Divide your page into thirds vertically and horizontally. That means two lines going each way. The four points at which the lines intersect are the point of interest. You’ll notice that none of those points are directly center on the page. If your typical scrapbooking layout is centered only, then you’re making your readers work too hard.

Place the most important element of your page on one of the points of interest. Don’t just center a photo on the intersections, place the important element of the photo on the sweet spot. That could be the subject’s face, a birthday cake, a Christmas present or whatever you want your viewer to focus on. Use one or two interest points per page and design around your important elements. Remember this rule when cropping your photos, too. Get that central subject on one of the points of interest.

Focal Point

When you’re using more than one photo per page, you may find that your scrapbooking layout seems out of balance. Photos taken at different times or with different cameras may seem darker or lighter when put together, while enlargements and close-ups can overwhelm other photos on the same page. Using a focal point can help balance your page.

When a photo is darker than others in a scrapbooking layout, it will overpower the others, so you can balance it out with background colors. Use two colors on the page: one dark and one light. By putting the darker photo on the lighter background, the weight of the picture is balanced. The darker background will make the lighter photos look more important to the eye.

Take a look at the group of photos you’re planning to combine on a page. If your eye goes to a specific photo first, use that one as your focal point. For instance, in a group of pictures of a child, the school portrait will draw your eye over the candid photos. If there is not enough difference between the photos, enlarge the one you want to focus on.

Your scrapbooking layout can have the professional feel if you use the same techniques as the pros.

If you have always wanted to start your own scrapbook, but feel daunted by the wide array of products available in stores, a scrapbooking kit is the perfect place to start.

A scrapbooking kit usually includes most of the staples for a basic page in a scrapbook album and may include most, or all of the following:

* Solid colored cardstock
* Patterned or textured papers
* Stickers or embellishments like beads or flowers
* Frames or borders for your pictures

These kits vary greatly in prices, sizes and selection of materials included. However, some of the things which may not be included in a scrapbooking kit include glue, scissors and the scrapbook itself. Whatever supplies you do buy on your own, make sure they are acid-free so that they do not damage your pictures and can be archived indefinitely.

Advantages

The biggest advantage of buying a scrapbooking kit is that half the work is already done for you. Most kits focus around a particular theme like baby girl, wedding or holiday and because their supplies share the same color theme, you need not buy more stuff to complete your first few pages.

For instance a scrapbooking kit with a summer theme will have bright-colored cardstock, beach ball or ice cream patterned papers and stickers with words like surf, summer fun, lemonade, sand castles and the like. All you have to do is choose a few of your favorite summer pictures, mount them on to the coordinated backgrounds, add some journaling and voila, you have your first scrapbook page!

Another reason why a scrapbooking kit is a good idea is that it provides free inspiration on how to lay out a page or creative ways of using borders and mats. You could just duplicate what you see on the package or adapt it to suit your photos and memories.

Because a scrapbooking kit takes out a lot of the guesswork from this popular paper craft, many people pressed for time or resources, often turn to these pre-packaged kits. In some cases, a scrapbooking kit may even turn out to be cheaper than buying all the materials separately.

Veteran scrapbookers do not rely on a scrapbooking kit as much because they have accumulated a large collection of supplies over the years and love to mix and match as much as possible.

Endless possibilities

You too can use your imagination even when using a scrapbooking kit because you need not use all the materials in the kit immediately. You can use the basic supplies and customize your layout. For example if you are making a scrapbook page for your son’s graduation, you could include some personal notes about how you felt or a funny quote of what your son had to say on the special day. You could glue on the graduation program and perhaps even the tassel from his graduation cap.

The possibilities are endless and a scrapbooking kit is just the first step on your journey to discover them.

If you’re the kind of scrapbooker that’s always looking for a new excuse to make a scrapbook, then try a mini theme album. It may be the scrapbooking idea you’ve been waiting for.

Make a Mini Album

How about a 6” square album? You can have several working at once, just devote each one to a specific theme, and add to them as you find the time or inspiration. This scrapbooking idea is perfect for gifts or just to get those photos out of the shoeboxes.

Try one for your mom’s birthday. She’ll love having the photos, and you can put her picture on a background of Paris or Venice or wherever she’s always wanted to go. Embellish with pictures of traditional gifts like candy and flowers and add a limo or a Picasso or whatever gift you wish you could afford. Tie it up with a ribbon and present it with some fanfare. Take a picture of her while she looks through it for the next album.

Simple Pages

The small size of the mini album makes simple pages pop. If you hate over-embellishing or feel that you leave too much white space, this is a great scrapbooking idea for you. The small size also helps make the little things more important. For an album of your daughter’s prom, you can do the journaling on cardstock imitating the card that came with her flowers. A little touch like that would be lost on a large page.

Some special events are difficult to complete. It seems like a silver anniversary celebration, for instance, brings in photos for years. So many people take so many pictures and have so many better things to do than get around to sending you copies. An event can seem to take a lifetime to record. You can take out the mini album and add pages to it whenever those photos arrive, since this is a project that doesn’t have to be completed until it’s truly complete. Is that the scrapbooking idea you’ve been looking for?

The small size of the pages also allows the photos to dictate the layout. A small picture can be embellished and leave room for journaling or a second picture, while a large photo may take only a title. The photos dictate the layout and remain the star of each page.

The album itself doesn’t have to be larger than the size of its page. A good scrapbooking idea is to make mini albums only six to eight pages long. You can easily make enough for gifts, since an album that size can be completed in a couple of hours. How about a mini album for all your family members at Christmas that commemorates last Christmas? Use a patterned background paper, and add solid page that pick up the colors in the pattern; everyone’s album can coordinate, too. Be sure to put the recipient’s name inside the album, since they will be passed around.

Often the reason that people find it hard to start with their scrapbooking is the enormity of the task at hand. This can be very daunting, and thus leading to yet another unfulfilled task that plagues the mind and gnaws at the soul.

However, what most beginners, or would-be-beginners, learning to scrapbook need to remember is that everything is done one step at a time. There are many scrapbooking for beginners resources that are available at the click of a button, so all excuses aside it can be, and has been, done before. The scrapbooking for beginners tutorials help make a mole-hill out of what would have otherwise been a mountain that could be standing in the way of your scrapbooking success.

Scrapbooking for Beginners Guide to the Galaxy of Scrapbooking

Imagine how many items that we use without consideration on an everyday basis would not have been invented had obstacles been allowed to conquer the will! It is the same philosophy that applies to scrapbooking, but you are not alone in your scrapbooking quest. There are many forums that are dedicated to acting as a scrapbooking for beginners guide. In these scrapbooking forums you can find the motivation that you need to actually put theory into practice.

The Interesting Scrapbooking for Beginners Rule!

The basic rule in scrapbooking for beginners is that there is never the feeling of ‘too late.’ You can always start scrapbooking anytime, and once you have made that commitment, you need to see it through at you own pace. But see it through you must, in order to experience the full momentum of the emotions. Never leave a scrapbooking project unfinished – this scrapbooking for beginners guide or guideline rule is said often, because you can easily lose your momentum and stop, only to later find it hard to return. This can result in a series of unfinished projects, which will leave you with a bitter taste in your mouth.

Don’t be deterred by the work that is required, it is the journey that matters and the quick getting there. Scrapbooking is like taking a long train ride through your life, enjoying the scenery, and taking a snapshot here and there as you go along. There is much to be learned as a beginner, and if you are really enthusiastic about taking this journey then you should not neglect the scrapbooking for beginners advice that you will get along the way.

In times where one needs focus, it goes without even saying that establishing a comfortable working space is more than just important, it is essential in keeping the balance between frustration and contentment. That is why investing in a scrapbooking desk can ensure that you never feel the frustrations of having all your scrapbooking stuff lying around in all the different places. What a scrapbooking desk does is offer you the required space so that you can compile your memories for as long as you wish.

There are many models to choose from, and sometimes it doesn’t even mean that you have to go out and buy a new scrapbooking desk. What you can do is invest in the time of using an old desk and making it useful to your scrapbooking needs.

How to Make a Versatile Scrapbooking Desk

There are few rules to remember when embarking on the wondrous adventures of working on a scrapbook. The most important thing is that scrapbooking is meant to be fun, and you are the only one that can preserve the memories the way that you choose. Then comes the creativity, where you make the scrapbook as creative as you choose it to be.

What you need to make your scrapbooking desk is, naturally, a nice, comfortable table and place tucked away in a comfortable space. Then you need to have your little storing spaces, which come in the form of shelves or tiny storage boxes. Label these according to your needs, and they need to be glued onto your desk, so you can have some of your storage boxes labelled pictures, paint, stickers, pencils and all of your other supplies.

This will help you get to work in a systematic order, but it will also depend on the type pf person you are. By making your own scrapbooking desk you will ensure that the memory preserving process goes according to your own wishes. Do not think that you have to work on a system that is based on ones own idea; instead, create your own scrapbooking desk so that you work at your pace and at your own comfort level.

Other Options For a Scrapbooking Desk

If you feel that you are more comfortable with the buying a scrapbooking desk, then you can do so. You will need to research the type of desk that will best fit with your needs and space. There are many websites available that will open this option for you, and you do not even have to leave your home to purchase your scrapbooking desk.

There is something so special about getting snail mail, mainly because of the rather impersonal effect of receiving e-mail. Even though it may be fast, it still lacks that passion and humanity that comes from a handwritten letter or card. Creativity is the great order of the day, and with that, it is no wonder people are finding themselves fascinated with a scrapbooking card.

This type of card is often made with the greatest love and patience, and that is why it is so much more meaningful than a store bought card. You can become the artist and the poet of your own card. What could be more rewarding than creating your own work of art and then giving it to a loved one?

Very Easy to Make Your Own Scrapbooking Card

There is not much scrapbooking material required for you to make your scrapbooking card, so it is the easiest task of them all. When you find the right scrapbooking products, you will be able to make your scrapbooking card in no time. The easiest way to make your scrapbooking card is to go onto the internet and find the free scrapbooking software. Here your options of variety are vast and you might find that you can be overwhelmed by it all, but once you have tackled this then you can begin your scrapbooking card production. Another way you can view your scrapbooking card is that it is a trial for bigger projects, and that is why you will work on it to the best of your abilities.

A Scrapbooking Card Can be Your Scrapbooking List

The other definition, which can be attached to a scrapbooking card, is that it is a card upon which you will make a list of the scrapbooking projects you wish to start. Here you can create your scrapbooking card as a calendar, and thus mark your progress through the different scrapbooking projects. You can invite your children to join in on the scrapbooking card project, and in that way you will be assisted in the creativity.

Here you can make a birthday or well wishing scrapbooking card that will be like no average store-bought card. This is indeed a good social activity that only enhances the experience if it is shared. And there is nothing more rewarding than getting a thank you card back, and you find out that you were the inspiration behind it all.

What a treasure it is to give all of yourself to the future generation, even better is the idea of giving some respect to the life that you have lived, and nothing says that more than a scrapbooking album. Here you are left in the intimacy of your memories, left to dwell on the days gone by. There is also no better time than the present to start your scrapbooking album. What usually leads people away from the path of creating a scrapbooking album is the mere thought of all those photos sitting in boxes. This leads to them to feel so overwhelmed that they would rather just let the pictures gather dust and get destroyed. The love and dedication shown by those that have taken the challenge of starting their own scrapbooking album shows that it can be done.

A Scrapbooking Album Requires Patience

The world is moving so fast, sometimes that we do not know where all the time has gone. That is why you need to understand that a scrapbooking album is more than just a single week’s work, it is something you have to dedicate yourself to. The scrapbooking album will require you to adopt an attitude of patience. In this you will be regarding your life as a diamond or some precious gem that can only be compiled with time. Patience is indeed a virtue that brings along a vast amount of rewards once it is seduced and conquered.

There is so much life that you have lived, and wouldn’t it be the greatest thing is you simply took the time to dust those pictures and make that scrapbooking album. You have to always remember that you are in charge of the amount of time that you wish to spend on your scrapbooking album.

You Can Dig for Gold with a Scrapbooking Album

Sitting and watching television might seem like a beneficial act, but in essence it is empty, while with the scrapbooking album, you are in an intimate atmosphere with time. You are caressed by your past as you open your mind to remembrance; besides, there is so much happening on a daily basis that we often forget things that have happened. And while you are busy making your album, you are allowing yourself to remember and to take note. It is also rewarding to go back after some time and look through your album to find those little diamonds that you left. You give your life meaning and mortality when you dedicate yourself to working on an album.

It seems like fun – everyone is doing it – and have you seen those great little doohickeys they have in the stores? These are all great reasons to get started in scrapbooking, so if you’re feeling overwhelmed by it or don’t know how to start, read on.

Start Simple

It’s really important to start archiving all of the family history, arranging all of the family pictures, or just to keep up with the rest of the family scrapbookers, but you don’t have to do it all in your first scrapbooking project.

Begin with a simple project and choose a theme: a certain vacation, a single holiday, a child’s school career, a wedding.

Don’t use all the photos you have, choose a few photos that tell the story you want to tell. Leave the rest of the photos in the shoebox for future projects.

Let go of the pressures by not setting a deadline. Don’t make the story strictly chronological, limit your color theme, set out to design each page differently, or set any unnecessary goals. Just relax and get started.

What You Will Need

Start scrapbooking with the bare necessities or with all the bells and whistles according to your personal style. First, you need an album, so pick one that will go with the idea that you have or let the store supply inspire you. While you’re in the store, pick up some refill pages to fit your album. You don’t want to run out in the middle of your scrapbooking project and discover that these exact pages are difficult to find. Get a good pair of scissors just for scrapbooking, and make sure they are comfortable in your hand and sharp, then keep them with your supplies.

You’ll need adhesive. Find one in the scrapbooking aisle of the craft store. Make sure it’s acid-free and is good for both photos and cardstock, because you will want to choose cardstock and paper to accent your photos. Choose holiday colors for holiday scrapbooking and baby pastels for baby scrapbooking. And lastly, you will need a craft store that specializes in scrapbooking so you can find specialized papers that are available by the sheet.

Stories need words. Select fine-tipped, permanent acid-free pens to supply the words, though, hand-printed titles may require wider tips. This shopping list will get you started, and the scrapbooking supplies in your craft store will show you many more items.

Step One

Find the photos that fit your chosen topic, and choose the two or three colors of paper that will enhance your photos. Select the photo that will be the page’s focus, then crop and mat the photos according to your taste. Add the titling and journaling and all the bells and whistles, like stickers and doodads. Then just arrange all the elements of the page before you start sticking anything on.

Now, that wasn’t so hard, was it? Good luck and good scrapbooking!

Paper scrapbooking is exactly what it suggests – you are using photos, construction paper, and other supplies to create decorative displays, or scrapbooks. In earlier decades, scrapbooks were very straightforward – they contained pictures that were mounted on grey pages and appeared very uncreative. Who would have thought that twenty years later paper scrapbooking would bring the displays to life and evolve into a craft – easy even for the beginner – and can lead to spending a lot of time, energy, and money on the hobby. Some people have even gone back and restructured their old scrapbooks – there is an upside to the fact that adhesive tape loses its adhesiveness over time, making the pictures easy to remove from older albums.

New to Paper Scrapbooking?

Some of the words in this article are newly formed for the latest phenomenon; scrapbooking is now a verb, and a scrapbooker or scrapper is one who creates scrapbooks. For someone who has never scrapped before, it can be very fun – like learning to knit, paint, or ride a bike – however, as the new artist gets more involved in creating different pages, they might find themselves running back and forth to the craft stores for different papers, stickers, or supplies. There will even be times when the artist has an idea for a page, but can’t find anything for sale to create their vision. In that instance, there are creative ways to make stickers or other graphics.

Making Paper Scrapbooking Accessories

For those scrappers who are comfortable on the computer, it is possible to create stickers for your album if you can’t find them anywhere else. Avery and Staples sell full page transparent sticker sheets; you can print clipart or text or anything else onto the transparent sticker, cut it out, and then glue it to your pages or plastic sleeve. It is also possible to make paper scrapbooking stickers by simply gluing pictures from the computer or magazines directly onto the pages. If you are not web savvy, you can find many different topics of accessories online or even through catalogues, such as the Oriental Trading Company.

Adding Text While Paper Scrapbooking

One of the most fun aspects of paper scrapbooking is the ability to add text in boxes and/or thought bubbles to the page, either of which can be created individually, or they can be purchased ready to be written in. Adding captions to pictures is always fun, but sometimes you don’t even need a picture; try adding a favorite saying or poem to the page? You can even create a border around a picture or the entire page, with words, texts, poetry, etc.

Creating a Paper Scrapbook Album

Once a new scrapbooker is comfortable with the concept, further skill allows for the making of the actual album. There are numerous courses on TV or in craft stores, as well as how-to-manuals available for purchase, that provide an instruction on how to create an actual paper scrapbook album. Some require folding paper along guidelines; some include gluing fabric to cardboard that has been folded, and some involve creating pockets or adding adornments.
