Preserving Memories with Scrapbooking

by Johnathan Sproles

Use scrapbooking to preserve all your personal and family memories. Scrapbooking allows you to be imaginative and inventive while making a treasured family heirloom.

Scrapbooking is a way of getting your keepsakes in the right place. Lurking in the attic may be shoeboxes and dresser drawers with long-forgotten pictures.Keep an open mind when looking around for items that would be suitable to work with!

After you have seen the types of pictures you have available, divide them into categories. You can use these categories to create themes for your scrapbooks. Some categories you might consider are family vacations, high school, your travels, sports events, the homecoming dance, or any other memory you would like to preserve. Choose a theme for your first scrapbook and stick with it. This will help your scrapbook to stay cohesive and meaningful.

Select a main idea for your scrapbook and then choose your highest quality photos for each topic you want to cover. Your “best” photos are those which capture the mood you are looking for and these are not always the ones which are posed or those which are the most aesthetically attractive. When choosing your pictures, don’t discount a photo that is off-center or has a portion you don’t want to focus on; all of this can be fixed with a few snips of the scissors. Note that the photographs you preserved for your scrapbook can be used to fill up the pages efficiently.

Including your photos in the scrapbook, consider the posibility of finding other momentos that are relative to the category desired. Adding items such as ticket stubs, a playbill, or pressed flowers can make your scrapbook pages more decorative and meaningful.

The next step is to arrange your page layout. This is the most challenging, but the most rewarding part of creating a scrapbook. Really let your imagination run wild! Be creative with the way you lay out your pages. You want each page of scrapbook to tell a story and be part of a cohesive idea. Use colored paper as background for your pages, scraps that you can make a collage out of, pieces of felt, fabric, or other unconventional background materials. You can really use anything that will give interest to your page.

Place the photos on top of these interesting backgrounds to create something unique. Long before placing it in one direct spot, consider the desired layout to balance your pages. This way, it will be satisfactory to you. Obtaining the specific look that you want to achieve will require you to crop and cut photos, as well as make adjustments to the other mementos you plan to include. This step can be extremely tedious, but you don’t want to hurry through it. In the end, it is the way the scrapbook looks that will make it stand out the most.

To get ideas on layouts, you may need to do your research. Ultimately, you should use whatever layout is the most pleasing to you, but there is no shame in looking into pre-made layout guides for inspiration.

Remember to include your finishing touches. Here is where you would enter the text that would explain your photographs, glitter, gems, buttons or other interesting additions to your page.

When creating a scrapbook remember that it is a physical memory, the process of making the book is that worthwhile part. If you put your heart and soul into scrapbooking you won’t be able to help being happy with the final result. Have fun scrapbooking!
